I realized that nike+ is a closed platform. The second main difference is the intent.
That is there is no countdown sound, and there is no voiceover telling me how far i have run etc.
No settings have changed on the phone or watch since the update, and the day before the update it was working correctly. Nike+ has garmin app shown as linked but garmin connect app no longer lists nike in partner apps and has no facility to add it.
