I use Map My Fitness (similar to Map My Run). I ran a 5k race on Sunday and tracked with Map My Fitness while I was running. MMF said I ran 3.16 miles in 29:51 with an average pace of 9:27. The official race results said I finished the race in 29:47 with a 9:35 pace based on the chip on my race bib. I ran 7 miles yesterday and thought I'd smashed my pace goal but on closer inspection, the app has logged my run as 10.5 miles and one stretch of the recorded route is all over the place. I signed up for the paid MVP program because I was enjoying the app thinking maybe that would solve the issue but no. When I start my walk from my phone, the GPS tracker is not keeping accurate distance at all. I trust my running app, most of the time.
